Manasquan’s History

Established as a community for almost 125 years, the Native Americans were among the first to enjoy the area along the river, inlet, lakes, streams, and brooks. The Lenni Lenape’s Unamis (“Turtle People”) branch were the first people ever to enjoy the summer on the Jersey Shore. They do fishing and hunting in the area. The name Manasquan was derived from their presence near the Manasquan River; however, it would not be officially adopted until 1887. Manatahsquawhan is a combination of the Native American words for the island, squaw, which means wife, and han, which means stream.

Manasquan was a part of Shrewsbury until 1801 when Howell Township was created. Ocean County was formed in 1850 from the southern half of Monmouth County, and Wall Township split from Howell the following year. Manasquan seceded from Wall soon after to form its own community. Roads and houses were built in a crude manner. Stores, a bar, and an inn were soon built. By the early nineteenth century, farming was also firmly established.

Today, Manasquan is a beach town with strong surfing culture. The town is also home to several marinas and charter fishing boats. There are many restaurants, ice cream parlors, and gift shops lining the Main Street in the downtown area. Manasquan is a popular destination for day-trippers from New York City and other parts of New Jersey. The town also has a vibrant nightlife, with several bars and clubs.
